Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs 46 days before Easter. Ash Wednesday 2018 is on Wednesday February 14. For the past three years a small group of members from East Plains has joined folks from West Plains for this special occasion.

During the season of Lent, the forty days preceding Easter, a Lenten Study Group is held, led by our Minister, Rev. Alison Nicholson. We also organize a Valentine's luncheon and bake sale that raises money for various mission projects, one of which supports the education of a student in Uganda.

The Scout-Guide Thinking Day Service also takes place during this period. The founder of Scouting, Lord Robert-Baden Powell, and his wife Lady Olave, one of the founders of Guiding, were both born on February 22. This is in honour of them and is a world wide event open to all faiths.

Palm Sunday falls on the Sunday before Easter and commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry in to Jerusalem. Traditionally the children of East Plains march through the Sanctuary carrying palm branches and hear the story of Jesus arriving in Jerusalem on a donkey. The sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated.

Maundy Thursday commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. "Maundy" comes from the latin "mandatum" meaning commandment. Jesus Christ, at his last supper commanded:
"And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." John 13:34.

The Good Friday is a religious holiday observed by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary (Golgothan).

Easter Sunday, celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter Sunday 2018 takes place Sunday April 1. As per tradition, East Plains held a special morning breakfast before proceeding to the sanctuary to hear the Easter message given by Reverend Nicholson.

Advent is the name of the season which Christians prepare for the celebration that commemorates the birth of Jesus. It begins the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas; this year on Sunday December 3, 2017. Traditionally, East Plains holds two services Christmas Eve: the family service is early in the evening to allow the children to dress up and play out the birth of Jesus. Traditional Christmas carols mark this special occasion. The later service includes communion, quiet reflection and carols.
