WIDER WORK MINISTRY

Our Commitment. Our congregation directs 13.5% of envelope givings to Wider Work. In addition, we run several fund-raisers during the year to support our Wider Work program. These fund-raisers include but are not limited to:

  • Our annual Perennial Plant Sale held the Friday and Saturday before Mother's Day in May.
  • A garage and book sale held in February.
  • Our annual Arts and Craft Sale held the first Saturday of November; we will be entering our 39th year in November 2013.

  • Our Beneficiaries. Monies raised in 2012 were directed toward the following organizations:

  • The Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada.
  • The Tekera Resource Centre in Uganda.
  • Partnership West Food Bank in Aldershot.
  • Wesley Urban Ministries in Hamilton.
  • Burlington Counseling and Family Services.
  • Kairos.
  • Halton Women's Place.
  • Idea Burlington.
  • Canada House (for Hamilton Youth).
  • Lesbian Gay Bi/Trans-sexual Youth.
  • Halton Community Development.
  • Out4Lunch.

  • The Pat Wells Memorial Education Fund. For 2013, East Plains has budgeted $600 toward the education of a student in Uganda. PDF

    The David Richards Memorial Fund. In 2012, Janice Barretto a member of East Plains, traveled to Peru as part of a project of a Canadian charity, Solidarity in Action, and was assisted financially by the David Richards Memorial Fund. PDF

    Christmas Day Dinner at East Plains December 25. This is a co-operative activity organized by Mary Dilly a member of East Plains, with volunteers from East Plains, St. Luke's Anglican and Holy Rosary RC. On December 25, 2012, we hosted approximately 400 people from our community, serving them a Christmas dinner of turkey, vegetables, apple pie and offering gifts to children.

    Professor Anne Pearson (of McMaster Peace Studies and grand-daughter of Lester B Pearson) was invited by IDEA Burlington to speak to the congregation of East Plains on November 26, 2012. She spoke on the topic " Gandhi and the Imperative of Interfaith Dialogue."

    The Climate Change Reading Group. Holds meetings four times a year to discuss books written about Global Warming and Climate Change. Our own Rev. Harold Wells facilitates the discussion with a group of 12-20 people. The group is co-sponsored by IDEA Burlington and Hamilton/Burlington Kairos. On April 25, 2012, Alanna Mitchell, author of "Sea Sick: The Global Ocean in Crisis," spoke at East Plains on the topic "Signs of Hope in a Carbon Crisis." Approx. 130 people attended.
